Thomas Daltrey

Hi Not sure if this is the right place but here goes! I am trying to find out about my husband's great grandfather Thomas Daltrey who served in the 23rd regiment of foot in India in the 1880s. I don't have any information about his army service other than that 2 of his children, James Daltrey (my husband's grandfather) & Elizabeth Daltrey were born in Meerut (1882) Chakrata (1881) and are listed as Army births. Can anyone help? Julie

Do you know where Thomas Daltrey was born or lived ?or his wife's name ?

There are 15 service records still in existence of Daltreys who served in the Great War. They were all from the Greater London area.

At the time of the births, Thomas would have been a 1st Bn man. They had left the UK bound for India on the 16th Aug 1880. They finally relieved The Royal Scots at Jubbulpore on the 30 Sept 1880. What details are listed on the birth docs please...Fathers Occupation/Rank etc. This might help our experts?

Also, there is a J Daltry 2/23rd Reg listed for a campaign medal during the 3rd Ashanti War. Guys I assume this is our 2nd Bn?

On the 1871 census he is a Private age 19 in the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers stationed at Hubberston Fort and Barracks, Pembroke
His son James Daltrey born 1881 Meerut

That figures, the Bn was based in Ireland from 1875-1879. Perhaps that's where he met Mary.

It's also worth mentioning that the 1st Bn were based in India until 1869, returning to Barracks at Devonport mid November of that year. Which leaves the option open that he may have actually served in India prior to the 1871 Census and his later deployment in 1880, dependent on what age he joined at. I wonder if he appears on any of Richard Wards Medal Rolls!
