Ivor,

This is the reply i got from SteinCenter.com:

Dave,

This is a custom stein that that unit had made. I don't know how many they ordered etc. Value is around $25 USD (£16.00)

found a bit more info on :-.http://www.steinmarks.co.uk/pages/pv.asp?p=stein88 . if you scroll down you will see that the mark on the base (photo 9 ) was in use between 1960 /1990.
is there any event connected to Lemgo within that period that which might warrant this. maybe the closing of a mess or something similar ?
i was trying to find a link to the company but it closed in 1997

Morning Ivor,

The only things i can think of is the time we were in Lemgo (1978 - 1982) or Alpha's doing an exchange visit to Australia or even the Queen's visit, but i would guess that most of these would have had some kind of inscription marking that

ok. let's bounce a couple of ideas around.
the reason i think it could be concerned with a particular event is.after i left the police i had many jobs, but i was fortunate to, at the age of 55,land a Civil Service post with the R.A.F. at R.A.F. Wyton Cambs.i was registry support for the Hercules aircraft team. the team was given an award for some reason and it was decided that a mug with an 'in house 'design logo would be a good idea.( i still use mine when in the u.k. )
i agree if it had been for a royal visit then an inscription would probably been added.as you found this in Australia then i suspect that, and you will have to correct me on this if i am wrong. if the Alphas were on an exchange visit from Lemgo, then an Australian unit would have been in lemgo.this wold have made a nice souvenir of that visit.

Ivor,

I would have thought the same, but when we 'Delta's' went to Denmark, a stein/mug was produced (as shown below), making me wonder if the stein i just bought was somthing the Battalion bought out for no other reason than a bringing it out to say we have been in Lemgo

lofty,

that is a possibility but. comparing your 'australian one ' with the 'denmark one ' well, there realy is no comparison.seeing your pics only confirms something that i have thought all along. i think that the 'Ausie ' stein, because it is so ornate compared with your 'denmark' mug may have been for Officers. this is why i asked in my earlier post about the closing of a mess. as this seems to me to be the sort of thing that any surplus funds might have been used for.

I remember seeing a stein like that from Lemgo. When A Coy went to Australia May/June 1982 (Falklands was on). An Aussie Coy came to Lemgo, perhaps one of them took it back with them,

i tried a few more ideas but with the company closing down i can get no further in that direction. at least now you know someone remembers one at Lemgo.which is also gone. so it gets more difficult. i wonder if the museum might have any knowledge, but i doubt it. if you could find out which ' ausie ' unit was involved maybe you might get some info from there.
i have gone as far as i can. i hope my input has been useful. so good luck with your search and if you find anything more i would be interested. but if you dont then just enjoy what is a nice piece.

Ivor,

The stein has arrived and looks rather stunning (lots better than the pictures)

I have been in touch with RHQ and they are pretty sure that there records do not go back that far, a shame really but as you said in your previous thread "just enjoy what is a nice piece".
