Thanks for the welcome. My name is Tim Howley and I was in the Royal Signals from 1969 - 1979. I am trying to find out whether a man who was in the 2 Bn in 1871 was an ancestor of mine. He was with the battalion in 1871 at Gillingham and his name (then) was James Jones Powell. I believe he may have been a Sergeant and he was married with two children. I say that he was then named James Jones Powell because I have a feeling that he may have enlisted under a false name and may have actually been called Nathan Jones Powell who was my great great grand-uncle. Is there any way that I can find out about when and where James may have enlisted and where he served?

Hi Tim, do you know when he was born or any more detail than above?

I have checked the Ashante medal roll and can find only two Powell's - Rees Powell and William Powell.

The best bet is to try and locate his service papers at the National Archives. Failing that you may well be able to trace him through the musters.

I have done a little more digging and he is not Nathan Jones Powell, but he is an older brother who I missed when I was looking at a census. He was born about 1823 and was a master tailor,, so it is possible that he may have been Regimental Tailor. I know that he wasn't in the Regiment in 1861 and he was a Sgt. in 1871, so given the slowness of promotion in those days he must have been a specialist of some sort. Can you tell me where the 2 Bn was in 1881 as I cannot find him or his family in that census which suggests to me that he may have been overseas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
