Sir Kyffin Williams
May 9, 1918 - September 1, 2006

A very sad loss to the regiment and his family. Sir Kyffin Williams, OBE, painter and teacher, was born on May 9, 1918. He died on September 1, 2006, aged 88.

During the late 1930's, He had served as an officer with the 6th Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers. During this period he was diagnosed with epilepsy, he was invalided out, much against his will, having completed 5 yrs service in 1941.

His love of his regiment was obvious, even to those of us who did not know him. He often featured in Newspaper articles in North Wales, and would almost always make mention of his regiment, or be pictured in his panama hat with regimental band, or something similar.

Many of our members will remember the picture which hung in the Drill Hall at Hightown Bks. The subject was Norman, the longserving Goat Major of 3RWF. Norman would often retell the story that when he met with Kyffin for the portrait sitting, Kyffin provided Norman with a "few" cans of beer!!! The resulting portrait shows Norman, in his Scarlets, slumped in a large chair, 3 sheets to the wind.....

Kyffin Williams work can be viewed at the Oriel Gallerys at LLandudno and LLangefni.

Our thoughts go to his family at this time.

Hello Al,
I spoke to Norman in the AGM. I have also seen the painting. Norman was well away as you stated.
