Hi All.
I,m just coming up to 15yrs since retirement from the battalion, can anyone enlighten me as to what happens to my pension, and what i need to do if anything about it .

Prior to 06 April 1975 there was no provision for a preservation of pension benefits and service personnel who left the Armed Forces had to have completed 16 years from age 21 (Officers) or 22 years from age 18 (Other ranks). Those who left before that date without completing the above criteria, lost all pension entitlement.

The rules changed on 06 April 1975 to provide for pensions to be preserved for payment at age 60 for all those discharged over the age of 26 with a minimum of 5 years service. On 06 April 1988, the qualifying period was reduced from 5 to 2 years and the age criterion was dropped. Preserved pensions have to be claimed at age 60.

Service pensions are administered by the Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency (AFPAA) but pension payments are made by Paymaster, the paying authority for the Armed Forces pension Scheme (AFPS).

A great help, it appears as the army changes , all that comes with it changes to, perhaps for the better(or worse).
none of us look forward to age 55 but it happens and it would be nice to think that when you get there , there will be a little something waiting for you,it was a privalege and honour to serve in , i think, one of the best battalions in the british army.

Now that the Pay Award for the Armed Forces has been announced, has there been any announcements on the rate that the Service Pensioners are going to receive?

Hi Bertie
i have been reading lots of stuff reference pensions, Bob Bacon has posted a good article on this forum, however , like you and i think lots more like us would be interested in if the pay award for sevice personnel affects our pensions.

Having lost my job (redundant August last) and because I was awaiting an Op
the Jobcentreplus people decided I could have Employment and support allowance (£30 odd quid a week). They of course adjusted my pension so I dont see a lot of that. Anyway I had a letter yesterday saying that they have information that my occupational pension is about to be changed and wanted to know the new figure. I like you, have not had notification but I suspect it will be in the next few working days. These guys dont miss a trick so you will know pretty soon.

As Gwyn stated those guys don't miss a lot. They are quick at adjusting your pension if you are earning a bit. I am paying 40% tax on my pension at the moment. Makes me wonder sometimes why I bother. Never mind, only 8 months to go for full pension. Mind you, I suspect the tax man will want 40% of that.

Yes Gwyn its a disgrace, sometimes a pension can be a thorn around your neck. When i lost my job due to the buncefield explosion, my dole money was £8 a fortnight, i never once went to sign for it, thankfully it didnt take me long to find another job, hopefully the taxman will be kind to us all this year( i think not)
