Does anyone know of an oulet in the UK that retails/wholesales our favourite ORANGE HANDBAGS?

Everyone knows Jinks is colour blind!
They were yellow handbags and ARRSE Concurs!! (http://www.arrse.co.uk/wiki/Herforder_Pils)
I know I saw Herforder on a UK supermarket shelf one time - probably Waitrose, but I've done quite a bit of Googling and it seems it's not available over here any more.
Off topic a bit - does anyone remember the free beer stunt in Berlin?
There was (at least) one type of beer available in both the East and West before the wall came down and the exchange rate was 9-1 (9 East Marks to 1 West Deutsche Mark)
So - you bought a crate of 20 bottles in the East, returned the full crate of empty bottles to somewhere like Aldi in the West and the deposit you got back, when changed to East Marks, bought another crate in the East - with some change!!!
The wall came down before I got a chance to try it - what a bummer!

ORANGE OR YELLOW NO MATTER......I'M CRAVING A HERFORDER PILS!
It must be the ice and snow that's making my freezing cold old body reminisce about those heady days in Lemgo
I've got my eldest now to contact the brewery direct (he's fluent in German) to see if there are any outlets here in the UK.

Thanks Brian
I've already contacted them they don't have a contract with that brewery. Tesco many years ago (15) had it as a special deal with them over the Xmas period as did Waitrose, but all fallen through to the multi-nationals that's where they get the biggest discounts and the largest profit-margins.
As long as the dont send over Shultheiss Pils we'll be OK(Sorry Brian that was the only downside of Berlin in the 70's and 80's) that was the foulest beer I've ever attempted to drink. Pauliner Pils from Southern Germany would do if they are in the UK market.

Hello Paul,
Done some more googling last night, hope I have not led you up a garden path?
Theanswerbank gave a thread of an ex squaddie'swife who was looking for Herfy Handbags, anyway try www.booze.com or europeanbeers.com These sites come up when you google Herforder Pils, but still did not see any listed.

I do remember back in Lemgo days having "Handbags" that were actually more orange than yellow, I guess that may have been a hiccup with the cardboard suppliers. (Larger photo version in photo gallery)
Perhaps Paul is recalling the same memories as myself as us old gits sometimes have clouded recall. Jase, you must have been nine or ten years old then so you would not of course have those memories.
Mmmmmmmm Herf!!!! :drunk: Orange Handbags methinks too.
Hmmm! I can just see me telling my ice hockey pals that I am going to buy an orange handbag for the big game tonight.

Pointless inviting them around for a "PIMMS" then?:winker: I take it none of them play for GForce.

I served in Lemgo with 1RRW, we too called them "Yellow Handbags".
I was out in Lemgo in 2007 and they now come in a "Blue" case.

What's all the nonsense about handbags . I don't recall any of you being Coffee Pots . When I was in Bravos , the call was "get the beers in" , who cares what they look like as long as it's cold .:winker:

How many members remember the bottles being a 'Flip Top'?
All I can say to this thread is, my memory isn't as good as it use to be but saying that "Orange handbags" seem to roll off my tongue as if it was yesterday, and I'm afraid "Yellow handbags" doesn't have the same effect, lol:cute:
As for being Blue :arghh:
The only flip top bottles I've seen lately is the lovely Dutch Beer Grolsch.

just for info boys the flip top bottle we had in berlin was flensberger pils , brewed in Berlin charlottenburg, plus the grolsch now that was a wicked beer

Ditto Guvs, I know Arrsepedia calls them Yellow, but orange seems more familiar!!

I seem to have made an incorrect statement earlier as i thought yellow was the only colour the beer in question was related to, my appologies to Hingey and all that knew I was wrong.

Yes Ianto
The three bottled beer sold in the Recce/sigs club in Minden in 1965 was Amstel, Heiniken and flip tops, im sure the flip top was "Herforder beer"

Having run the MT Bar in Minden, I agree that it was possible that the flip top bottle was Herforder.

Hi Nick today I bought a * herford Konti * or yellow handbag, only 8 bottles in it 330ml a bit expensive though ! it cost 4,29 euros !!! and I get back 64 cents deposit , t,morrow I will check out what a crate costs, 24 bottles 330ml or 500ml , if I come by car for the reunion I could well bring some with me, over here Herford beer has gone down in standard, Warsteiner or Königs beer and Krombacher are the 3 leading beers which taste far better, here now you can buy beer with many things in it , Herford has 6 or 7 sorts ! on the colour point, some would say the orange is yellow and visa versa and yes they did have blue konti`s. will check that out t`morrow, ok Rob 17

IS hereforder sold throughout Germany? as my oldest son is serving in the AAC in Gutersloh and when I ask him about getting me the " Yellow Handbag" (HereForder Pils which they sold regilously in the NAAFi) he says he has never heard of it?
Now ask him to get a bottle of Aschbach Brandy No Problem.

Hi Benny, I`m very suprised your son does`nt know of a yellow handbag / herford Konti, they are definately available in most garage shops in Gütersloh suprisingly tho Herford is a big seller in Cuxhafen and the northsea resorts, Herford has a lot of competition in its own area due to Barre beer from Lübbecke which is just over the hill and Detmolder beer, we serve only Barre or Warsteiner on draft in our own GB club here in Minden, personnal taste of our members. I`m sure your son will find a garage that sells Herforder konti`s but even the main supermarkets stock them, good luck on your search. Ta 17

P.S on last, 20 bottles O,5ltr Herforder Pils cost 12,49 euro and 24 bottles O,330ml cost 10,49 euro boy am I glad to be living here when I read what beer back home costs, then again we can`t buy british beer except Newcastle brown and John Smiths draught here, as long as the beer is cold and refreshing who cares ! ce la vie 17
